Match
Angel City’s last game was a 3-0 loss at home to Orlando Pride, despite midfielder Adriana scoring two in the first half and forward Barbara Banda scoring three in added time.
Gotham’s last result was a 1–1 draw at home to the Seattle Reign, in which midfielder Rose Lavelle put them ahead in the 47th minute and an own goal by Gotham midfielder Neely Martin late in added time sealed the draw for Seattle.
Gotham, in fourth place, currently has 8 wins, 3 losses and 4 ties. Angel City is in 11th place with 4 wins, 8 losses and 3 ties.
ACFC has a record of 1 win, 3 losses and 1 draw against Gotham, most recently a 1-2 loss away to Gotham in early June.
Scouting Report
After starting the 2024 season with one win, two losses and two draws, the 2023 champions have bounced back with seven wins, one loss and three draws since April 28th.
The Gothams went on a recruiting spree last offseason, acquiring four U.S. women’s national team regulars (defender Tierna Davidson, midfielder Crystal Dunn, midfielder Rose Lavelle and defender Emily Sonnett), but it is lesser-known former Chicago Red Stars midfielder Ella Stevens who leads the team in scoring with five goals this season.
Stevens’ performance is just one example of how Gotham isn’t a team that relies on stars for success: Their chances are also coming from multiple sources, with midfielder Yazmin Ryan and defender Jenna Nyswonger each having three assists, and Stevens and forward Ester each having two.
The team has continued to enjoy success with the possession-based style of play that coach Juan Carlos Amoros implemented last season, and they have also been strong defensively, currently conceding the second-fewest goals in the league with 12, just one behind second-placed Orlando.
A proper farewell
The City of Angels has just one player, New Zealand’s Ali Reilly, who will be competing in the Paris Olympics this summer, but five others – forward Claire Emslie, midfielder Kennedy Fuller, midfielder Rocky Rodriguez, forward Alyssa Thompson and defender Giselle Thompson – have been called up to international action at senior or youth level.
Emslie will represent Scotland against Slovakia in a UEFA Euro 2025 qualifier, while Rodriguez will play for Costa Rica in the U.S. Women’s final pre-Olympic friendly on July 16.
Alyssa Thompson was called up as a trainee player for the U.S. pre-tournament camp but was not named to the final roster of just 18. Gisele Thompson and Fuller have both been called up to U.S. youth national teams, with Thompson on the U-20 team and Fuller on the U-17 team.
