Barcelona’s financial situation ‘difficult to gauge’ amid growing interest in Chelsea and PSG targets
Athletic Club’s Nico Williams has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs, especially after his impressive performances at UEFA Euro 2024. Chelsea are particularly interested in the 21-year-old, with one of their players potentially trying to convince him to move to London.
A recent report from CaughtOffside claims Williams has attracted the attention of several big clubs including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Barcelona and PSG.
Barcelona are faced with major obstacles due to their financial situation and the fact that Athletic Club are unwilling to negotiate with the player and are demanding that he pay the 58 million euro release clause.
In an interview with PSG Talk, journalist Robin Bearner spoke about Barcelona’s financial situation regarding the transfer of Williams, who Paris could potentially use as a replacement for Kylian Mbappé, who moved to Real Madrid this summer.
“When you read the reports in Spain, I think it’s very difficult to judge how much money Barcelona really have,” said Bairner. “On the one hand, [Barcelona president] Joan Laporta has publicly admitted that PSG have rejected a €250 million bid for Lamine Yamal.
“But on the other hand, they are struggling to get players. Whether it’s £20 million or €50 million for Nico Williams, he is one of the best bargains on the market at the moment. He was in great form at the Euros and obviously had a great season with Athletic Club.”
Williams has made 37 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals and providing 19 assists.
