LOS ANGELES – NJ/NY Gotham FC defeated Angel City FC 2-1 on Saturday night at BMO Stadium to earn three points before the international break.
Gotham (9 wins, 3 losses, 4 draws, 31 points), who maintained their fourth place in the National Women’s Soccer League, defeated 11th-placed Angel City FC (4 wins, 9 losses, 3 draws, 15 points) to record their second consecutive win of the season.
Midfielder Rose Lavelle recorded her fifth goal of the season, tying her career high, while midfielder Delaney Sheehan scored her first goal of the regular season.
The visiting team started the game on the front foot and got some early link-ups in Angel City’s half, and in the third minute, Gotham FC had a chance on goal when Lovell broke through the Angel City backline and had a one-on-one opportunity, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Gotham FC took the lead in the 16th minute. The scoring streak began when Sheehan stole the ball in the opposition’s half. Forwards Ella Stevens and Crystal Dunn combined at the top of the box. Dunn passed the ball to Lovell inside the box, who took one touch and smashed the ball into the back of the net.
Gotham FC doubled their lead in the 40th minute, as the team won the ball in the attacking third from an Angel City throw-in, Dunn sent Stevens deep into the box, where she got the ball past the goalkeeper and made a pass to a free Sheehan, who tapped it in for his first goal of the season.
Angel City FC pulled one back with a penalty kick in the 67th minute, scored by forward Claire Emslie.
Gotham FC will return to action in the NWSL x LIGA MX Summer Cup against the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, July 20 at 5 p.m.
