Authorities said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department quickly pursued the carjacking suspect, ending the chase with deputies opening fire Wednesday afternoon in the Harvard Heights neighborhood.
Shortly after the pursuit ended near South Vermont Avenue and Venice Boulevard at 2:47 p.m., paramedics loaded a man on a stretcher into a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance with a patrol car just behind a silver sedan that had come up onto the curb.
Authorities said the pursuit continued along the westbound 10 Freeway, and SkyCal captured the final seconds of the chase on camera.
A large plume of smoke erupted from the vehicle when it first came to a stop. A person in the driver’s seat was briefly visible before being obscured by the smoke. Officers surrounded the vehicle with their weapons drawn and opened fire a few minutes later. The reason why the officers began firing remains under investigation.
Aerial photos show the car’s window completely shattered, with bullet holes on the outside.
Officers extricated the person from the vehicle, who was then placed into a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance. Police said the suspect sustained gunshot wounds. The suspect’s condition is currently unknown.
