Former Los Angeles Dodgers star Raul Mondesi has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for his role in a corruption case he was involved in while mayor of a local city in the Dominican Republic.
Prosecutors allege that Mondesi, 53, embezzled $5 million while he served as mayor of San Cristobal from 2010 to 2016, according to ESPN.
His sentence, announced Friday after the plea agreement, also includes a $507,000 fine.
Mondesi played 13 major league seasons, half of them with Los Angeles, where he was named Rookie of the Year in 1994, an All-Star in 1995 and won two Gold Glove Awards, and also appeared in eight games with the Los Angeles Angels towards the end of his career.

Mondesi retired after the 2005 season and began his political career the following year.
Dominican prosecutors have charged the former baseball slugger with forgery, membership in a criminal organisation and fraud. ESPN reports that he has been under house arrest for six years, and that his sentence has now expired.
Mondesi’s son, Adalberto, was a member of the Kansas City Royals, who played in the 2015 World Series, and is currently a free agent.
