North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum on Thursday appointed Greg Hoffman, who had been serving as the state’s interim chief information officer, as the state’s full-time chief information officer.

Hoffman served as deputy chief information officer alongside former state chief information officer Kuldip Mohanty and took over on an interim basis after Mohanty resigned in May to spend more time with his family.
Prior to his role as deputy CIO, Hoffman led the North Dakota Department of Information Technology’s Management Services Division for eight years. He joined state government in 2005 as a budget analyst, according to a press release.
“Greg has a deep understanding of NDIT’s operations and understands the importance of strong customer service, and he works collaboratively with our partner agencies to provide technology solutions that best serve North Dakotans,” Burgum said in the release. “I’m grateful for Greg’s nearly two decades of service, and I look forward to his leadership as NDIT continues to prioritize customer service, embrace emerging technologies like AI, and strengthen our cybersecurity to ensure that the citizen data entrusted to our state is safe and secure.”
In a press release, Hoffman said he plans to focus on improving customer service, generative artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data literacy in government.
“Together with our talented team, we will continue to innovate and deliver technology solutions that best serve North Dakotans, ensure their data is secure and their needs are met efficiently and effectively,” Hoffman said in the release.
As CIO, Hoffman oversees the state’s $275 million technology operating budget and a technical staff of 500.
The North Dakota Department of Information Technology announced in January that it had promoted one of the state’s data and analytics directors, Kimberly Weiss, to statewide chief data officer. Weiss, a former epidemiologist with the North Dakota Department of Health, is tasked with ensuring that data is a key part of the state’s IT strategy.
