The United Shore Professional Baseball League kicks off its ninth season today
The United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL) will kick off its ninth season at Jimmy John’s Field in Utica on May 17. The league is made up of four teams – the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers, Eastside Diamond Hoppers, Utica Unicorns and Westside Woolly Mammoths – who will play against each other every weekend during the summer, totaling approximately 70 games.

Our Detroit wins five Excellence in Journalism awards
Hour Detroit contributors received five awards at the 2023 Excellence in Journalism Awards on May 15. The awards are presented annually by the Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and recognize entries from the previous year that demonstrate outstanding achievement in print, digital, radio and television journalism. Four Hour Detroit journalists, two photographers and one designer were honored.

The College for Creative Studies transformed Detroit’s Cadieux Stage into a fashion runway, showcasing more than 130 designs created by 23 fashion students, guest designers from other departments, and international students on May 4, 2024. More than 200 guests attended CCS’s fourth show, including talent acquirers from Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, and Tapestry.
Independent film director Roger Corman dies at age 98
American film director Roger Corman passed away on Thursday, May 9th, surrounded by his family at his Santa Monica home, according to a statement posted on his official Instagram. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 98 years old. Corman was born on April 5th, 1926 in Detroit and is known for producing hundreds of low-budget B-movies, including “Piranha” and “Little Shop of Horrors.”
